The La Puente Valley Historical Society was founded in October, 1960, and incorporated in 1966.

SOCIETY MEETINGS

Currently meetings are being held on the third Tuesday of the month at the La Puente Library. Meetings are not held during the month of July and August.

PUBLICATIONS

  • The Bridge - quarterly newsletter (for members)
  • La Puente KALEIDSCOPE - Part I and Part II - "A collection of little bits and pieces ... that reflect the colorful history of La Puente ... told (mostly) in the words of the people who lived it."
  • John A. Rowland Home - booklet giving details of the Rowland family and the home.
  • Footsteps to the Past - true stories of persons, places and events of the San Gabriel Valley In days gone by.

SCOPE

  • On November 4, 1969, the Society signed a 25-year lease (with option for 25 more years) on the Rowland Home and the Dibble Museum which had been willed to the Hudson School District by John Rowland's granddaughter, Lilian Hudson Dibble.
  • The society began restoring the Rowland Home, cook house, and museum with support and help from many community organizations. A Docent Group was trained to give tours of the home and museum. The home is currently being restored.
  • The society use to maintains a Heritage Room in the La Puente City Hall, 15900 East Main Street.

SPECIAL PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

  • The first barbecue was held on the grounds of the Rowland Home in October, 1960, beginning a tradition which the Society has carried on each year since that time.
  • Beginning in 1969, the Society has entered prize-winning booths at the Los Angeles County Fair. Themes have included the Rowland and Workman Homes, The Grape Industry, General Store, Blacksmith Shop, Quilting Bee, and The Arrival of the Rowland-Workman Party in 1841. The Society is not longer participating in the Fair.
  • As a United States Bicentennial project, members and friends of the Society appliqued a quilt depicting historical events of the La Puente area. The quilt was displayed in the Bank of American Lobby at 15625 Stafford, City of Industry (just east of Hacienda Boulevard)., but it is now on display at the the First United Methodist Church of La Puente- 15701 E Hill Street La Puente, CA 91744.
