History

History

There are two organizations that are primary sources of historical information about the land and the early settlers of Hacienda Heights (Rancho La Puente). They are The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum and the La Puente Valley Historical Society. Both are local.

The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum has many events that are held throughout the year, particularly focused on the Workman and Temple family.

The La Puente Valley Historical Society is also a fine resource for information about John Rowland and La Puente City. They are directly involved with The Rowland Home and The Dibble Museum. The Rowland Home is currently being restored

For more recent historical information, see our local Library.

Dibble Museum

Dibble Museum

In 1950, Lilian Dibble, granddaughter of John Rowland, turned the water tank located south of the home into a museum especially for the school children. The Round House, as it is now called, contains ranch equipment and Indian artifacts, and is included with tours of the home.

Many items from the home are on display in room settings in the museum, giving a feeling of how the Rowland's lived. Also displayed in the museum are Indian baskets and other artifacts together with tools and items from the Rancho Period, presenting a graphic history of life as it was in the valley at different periods of time.
